On Saturday, May 9 at 3:30 p.m., the South Street Seaport Museum presents the premiere of three short documentaries by OnThisSpot NYC celebrating the women artists of Coenties Slip: Agnes Martin, Lenore Tawney, and Chryssa. The event is free and open to the public; registration is suggested.

The Women of Coenties Slip: Art, Connection, and Place South Street Seaport Museum 213 Water Street, New York, NY 10038

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, these artists formed a close community in a narrow historic enclave near Manhattan’s Financial District and the East River, where former maritime warehouses offered sweeping river views and a rare, quiet freedom for artistic exchange. Agnes Martin lived in an un-permitted loft at 3–5 Coenties Slip; Lenore Tawney worked from a light-filled studio at 27 South Street, its polished floors housing her looms and disciplined weaving practice.

The program includes discussions following each screening, with scholars closely connected to this history: Kalliopi Minioudaki, contributor to Chryssa & New York, Dia Chelsea; Prudence Peiffer, author of The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever; and Kathleen Nugent Mangan, Director of the Lenore G. Tawney Foundation.
