A new short documentary on Lenore Tawney is now available to watch online.
The film is part of The Women of Coenties Slip: Art, Connection, and Place, a series of three short documentaries produced by OnThisSpot NYC about the women artists who lived and worked among the former sail-making lofts of Coenties Slip: Agnes Martin, Chryssa, and Lenore Tawney. The series premiered on May 9, 2026 at the South Street Seaport Museum, a few blocks from the Slip itself, with a screening and discussion of the neighborhood that shaped these artists’ work.
Tawney arrived at 27 Coenties Slip in 1957, at age fifty, having left a comfortable life in Chicago to begin again as a full-time artist. In the decade that followed, the lofts along the East River waterfront held one of the most remarkable concentrations of artists in New York, and it was there that Tawney made the breakthrough weavings that would redefine her medium.
